KWorld KW-TV878RF-PRO

ECS k7sem with duron 800mhz duron "called 1200xp+" 512 mb pc133 sdram.
I could not get this card to run properly (applications would freeze) until I changed my power supply. hint: stay away from no name cheap power supplies. Once that problem was resolved everything worked fine: tv, recording, radio. Channel changing is a bit slower than my leadtek. I tried the card with RedHat 9 with no success....no tears on that one since i prefer winxp anyways ;)

Not the greatest resolution but good enough for recording tv shows. Dont use this card if you want to preserve the highest possible quality of your VHS tapes.

I wonder if this card will work with MCE 2005.

Primarily using this card as part of a MythTV system. I've not tested the radio, but I did get the remote control working under Linux. However, the reason I bought this card was that it was very inexpensive and supported S-Video. The computer I use dual boots into Windows 98, strict for testing hardward under windows for comparision with Linux. I can't get S-Video to work under either operating system. Both show blue screens.

It's a good card for the price, but I'll end up replacing it with another card at some point in the future to get S-Video in.

I give 6 because software is no good. If you want to good capture use WinDVR or PowerVCR. I have problem with PowerVCR. He give error after 3-5 min. If you don't have this probleme please say me.

I'm currently capturing using PowerVCR II version 3[1].0_build_0618 by Cyberlink. I gotta tell you it was a real smooth install. I installed newest drivers from the http://www.kworld.com.tw site and didn't even bother with the PVR software that comes with it. Bundled software always seems to be crappy unless it's Nero. The remote control works with PowerVCR except for the Mute and MTS buttons. I'm extremely happy with this card. I had tried the WinFast2000 from NewEgg but got tons of interference. This card is crisp, clean and cheap. And for 34 bucks at NewEgg you can't beat it.

Note from the earlier comment about mono only, cant get it to recognize Stereo

I think this is related to the model of the card - there are various TV878 models - the basic one (which I also have) is MONO only, the stereo version is a grade up - but I expect that the bundled software is the same. It lets you change a channel to stereo, but it promptly switches it back.

I was a bit displeased with this myself - since I wanted the stereo (and I expect the embedded ProLogic surround info) to maintain high quality audio....

But good at the price, and I got it mostly for capturing home videos - so I dont _really_ care about the sound quality or stereo.

This card is great, paid $35 including shipping from Newegg. I had sound problem as described by two other people. I solve it by updating DiretX9.0. After updating sound works perfectly and FM, too. It is a good buy.

A number of things. I've had my eye on this card for a while, but it appears the bundled software has changed - for the worse. First the pros and cons of hardware:

--Hardware:--
*S-Video - Untested
*Composite - Awesome Quality
*TV Tuner - Decent video, terrible audio (mono, lot of noise from audio out on card... can't seem to get rid of)
*FM Tuner - Not used. Size of standard RCA audio port... they would have done better to make an audio input in instead.
*Remote - Works well, nice little toy
*No Audio in! A real hassle! If you want to switch between Composite and TV Tuner, you need to disconnect the audio cable that plugs into the line in from the tuner out to your input RCA source, not to mention no RCA -> Stereo cable included, need to buy own of your own

--Software:--
A complete joke. PVR Plus is a total piece of crap. Used to be bundled w/ WinDVR. Very few options, file sizes huge. DivX MPEG-4? MIght as well capture as uncompressed b/c you can't adjust bitrate and caps at about 16000 kbps! Audio is uncompressed PCM. Mpeg capture quality sux. AVI capture is just uncompressed avi. Can't cap in XVID using this software. When record function begins, the already bad TV audio signal gets even worse so you hear a whining the whole time. VirtualDub will only capture at 320X240.
Buy the card, but use VirtualVCR (free, no problems like w/ virtualDub) for AVI capture (excellent for realtime DivX caps, many filters too, lets you resize, more audio/video options than PVR Plus software (open DML style) very simple and intuitive interface)
Watching TV w/ TV software is good however... just terrible whining from record. Your best bet is to hook your antenna to a VCD and hook that up to your card, that way you don't need to switch cables on your PC... much easier w/ VCR, also VCRs have better TV audio/video tuner than the built in one and also does stereo. Of course, your remote becomes limited at that point in time, ans schedhuled recording may be a pin.

Xpert tv-pvr878 This seems like a very nice card. I'm using it with win xp pro,AMD 2600,mobo m7ncd. Good picture quality, had minor issues with the FM but updated the software from the web site and im picking up 2 or 3 stations now. Maybe the antenna is the issue? Anyway, my real issue is the TV and FM sound. The sound cuts out after about 20 seconds. To get the sound back i have to switch between TV and FM and back to TV and the sound might be ok for about a 30 sec to 1 min then cuts out again. Anyone had this problem. The new drivers from the web site don't seem to correct the problem. Possible a system sound setting? The TV-PVR software lacks sound settings or sound help features.

Card is actually labeled Xpert TV-PVR 878 "V-Stream" but made by Kworld. I'm just using it for VCR capture with Virtual VCR and so far after two weeks, no problems. Includeed drivers installed fine - haven't tried the tweaked versions. Only negative is weak documentation and website. Captures at 720X480 are dropping no more than 3-6 nonconsecutive frames per 30 minutes on my P4 2.4Ghz XP - probably due to blips in the VHS tape. Using Vdub and Tmpgenc rather than included software for editing/encoding so can't comment on the other software included.

Bottom line - for $38 at New Egg its doing everything I need. If I ever use the TV or FM features, thats just gravy.

Installation repeatedly hung during the driver install section. Bitch to install with any previous drivers loaded, finally cleaned all the pre-existing drivers out and downloaded newest versions from kworld. Worked fine then. Remote control doesn't seem to work but not important. The bundled software is pretty sucky, I use WinDVR and ULeadWS, results are very impressive for the $36 I paid for it. 9 cos of the install hassles/sucky software and the non working remote.

For the price, it's superb. Available input are S-video, coax, microphone, audio and an FM antennae (it's an FM Tuner also). The only problem I had was getting the card into the PCI slot, then lining it up with the screw on the back of the computer case. The bundled software worked first time and within 30 minutes of beginning hardware installation, I was capturing one of my old VHS tapes and converting it into digital video. The software has a fully functional, programmable TV tuner with many features. Highly recommended, but for best results, don't run it on anything slower than a 1Ghz Pentium and kill all TSRs and other applications that take CPU or access the HD during encoding. Unless it's something live, I do all my converting after bedtime by setting the timer function.

Mine is KW TV878RF-PRO (878TV Rev: D)
It has the Conexant Fussion 878A chip and a Philips Tuner.
I have this card 4 months now and I know it pretty well.
First of all, it is a very cheap PCI card. Maybe the cheapest card avalaible right now in the market. It has an old version of WinDVR, which works great for realtime mpeg 2 captures (software). It can convert to mpeg 2 realtime at any framesize without issues.
For the best results, just use Brooktree´s latest tweaked drivers for capturing.
This card works excellent with all the well known and wide used capture programs, like virtualdub, virtualvcr and iuVCR on win2k, winXP and win98SE.
It can capture PAL, SECAM and PAL60 (which is NTSC Covered) without issues and no framedrops.
For real time mpeg 2 captures, a better alternative to windvr is mainconcept 1.4.1 (or later): This encoder has a built in capture tool, which allows realtime capture and encode , at any framesize with any bitrate, using the mainconcept encoder's engine. It works excellent with this card and my tests show me that analogue captures from TV (S-Video in for video, Line-In for audio, I don't use the tuner to capture...)@ 352 x 576 @ 2700Kb/s average has no blocks and artifacts. And the final picture looks fair good on my TV.
So, overall and for that price, it is a very good and working card. So, is this the perfect cheap card? Unfortunatelly no..

Even if it is true that work excellent with all the framesizes and all the well known programs, you don't have a good picture quality overall. It is blured even compared other bt8xx cards (like Hauppauge's winTV series)or nvidia cards. It looks like the older ATI cards IMHO.
In praxis, and if you use PAL, you have to capture at 704 x 576 or 720 x 576 for decent sharpness on your projects. On the popular 352 x 576 and 480 x 576 framesizes, the picture is somehow blured. Compared my Asus 7700 card, is like night and day. Great loss of detail if you don't capture full (or cropped) D1 CCIR 601!

There is an advance alternative to keep sharpness in smaller framesizes: If you can, cap at 368 x 576 and then resize to 344 x 576 and expand (add borders...) to 352 x 576. For issues discussed on various forums (like here: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=199669&highlight= ), this method for this specific card show me much better results, than direct 352 x 576 captures. Try it yourself, you might be suprised!

Of course, for mainstream users, this card is more than enough for VHS to DVD transfers, the cheap way. It is not bad at all for the price. That's why I give it a 9. You get more than you pay for!

I am using the 878RF-Pro version.

This loaded and install cleanly on XP SP1. The drivers were flagged as non-MS certified, but this did not appear to be an issue.

The bundled WinDVR version is 1.8 B021.122C00 . This also worked without issues out of the box. You'll have to fiddle the settings for capture/tv tuner (setting NTSC, channels, source, etc) , but these are relatively easy to do. I have limited test time with capturing, but the short files that captured at full NTSC-DVD resolution and compressed real-time to MPEG2 were clean, and of good quality. I captured files from both the tuner, and from the composite source (from a VCR). I tested capture with WinDVD, Vegas Video 3.0 Capture, and VirtualDub - all appeared to work at a basic level.

One issue is the sound input if you are capturing from mutiple sources. I set up mine so that the tuner card inputs sound the mic input, and the VCR inputs to the line-in input of my sound card. I then use the XP mixer to select which source for audio capture.

Documentation is pretty sparse for this product; The company website is pretty sparse as well. However, I did not need additional information to install and use the product, but I do have unanswered questions about using the card for encoding mpeg from other avi files that I may have. The card also is advertised as "Mpeg playback", however, I fail to see how this would work or be used.

Install okay, but pc completely locks up when trying to execute TV Tuner in PVR Plus. Hear sound on channel 4, but everything locks up when trying to find frequency. Drivers on System Display show no errors. Can't figure it out. Running Win Me on AMD XP 1.47Ghz 512 MB DDR, Aopen AK79-D 1394 mobo (integrated NVidia NForce Chipset, Sound), ATI Radeon 8500 64mb. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Compared to price & quality, it is more than good enough for video capture. I never use software that come with bundle except drivers & TV Station. I use VirtualDub(freeware) to capture & trim commercials/filters & save as .avi file in ntfs partition. Use TMPEGEnc to convert to .mpg file for VCD/SVCD/DVD burning. If you want to spend $ get PowerVCR III 3.0 for video capturing.

I can't figure out how to get the darn sound to work. I get video OK, and admittedly, I'm new to the whole capturing thing, but I'm not sure how I'm supposed to hook it up. Someone mentioned before that sound input goes directly into the sound card. The way I'm attempting to hook it up is with an RCA cable plugged into the video input of the capture card and the line in of the sound card, but it's not working (and I've tried a million other ways as well, with coaxial cables, s-video cables, etc). It's really getting frustrating and I'm considering buying an ATI card, if just for its "Plug it in here, dummy!" easy-useability. If you know how to make it work, I'd love to hear from you.

I gave this card a 10 because I don't feel it can be beat for cost per feature ratio.

I bought a KWorld KW-TV878RF-PRO "Mpeg TV Statio/PCI" package for $38 from www.compgeeks.com. The installation was seamless, software installed easily with one exception -- the WinProducer software caused a memory error when installed and then again when run the first time. After I revisited the application later on, it was working fine and has since. The software (WinDVR and WinProducer) is more than adequate -- it out performs $300 packages that I've demo'd. The software is a about two version old with no discounted upgrade path (you have to pay full price for latest version), but so far I haven't really seen why an upgrade would be needed. As a matter of fact, the upgrade to version 2.0 is a downgrade -- it doesn't support MPEG2, whereas this earlier version does. All TV aspects of the card work great, the video capture works great, and I've started converting my extensive VHS movie library to SVCD with much success. I've also started combining my home movies off my 8mm video camera and MPEG video clips from my digital camera into SVCDs as well. This system is capable of producing full DVD quality recordings, and the PVR and "TIVO" functions are pretty nifty as well.

For $38, why look further? I've tried both Hauppauge PVR cards, and they were not as easy to install, the software was inferior, and the were literally 3 to 4 times the price. For the $ savings, I'll take software encoding over hardware encoding any day!

My system is a Dell P4 1.8ghz, 256MB RAM, 30GB hard drive, generic 3d video card, generic sound card, DVD-ROM, and CD-RW.

I installed the drivers for windowsXP only (uninstalled all TV software that were packaged with this card because its crap).I am using Showshifter software with this card and it works great. I have a super clear picture and showshifter is very easy to use (www.showshifter.com). The only problem I have found is with my recorded audio, after recording from TV I get a background humming noise. I thinks it is from my TV coaxial cable, because when I record from my camcorder the audio is clear.

My system: Athlon (Slot A)900Mhz,ATI 32mb Radeon TV-Out AGP (Simultaneous monitor and TV viewing) card, Sony mini camcorder, PC133_256 mb memory and 60GB hard drive.

Awesome card, worked right away out of the box, clear mpg captures, decent FM radio toodespite a terrible antenna. The Win DVR software packaged with it was great, no problems at all. Definitely recommend.

Im using this on a Win XP system. XP1700+, 768MB ram, 80gb Western Digital HD dedicated, sony dru500ax dvd+/-rw drive.

I purchased the KWORLD Maxron MaxTV card (as the box says) and had some problems installing it. For one, it wanted a file tsbyuv.dll which I did not have on my ME system restore disks. Fortunately, I was able to find and download it off a Russian site. The installer claimed I didn't have any driver installed, so I had to run the setup in a folder on the CD instead. Now, I can get one station but there is no audio - not playing FM nor a station. I've tried patching it through my sound card as well as connecting directly to an amplifier. I'm running a PIII 933mHz with 512mb RAM.
