Description (from the manufacturer site)
The WinTV-DVB-s and WinTV-Nexus-s are designed for receiving, decoding and displaying Digital Video Broadcasts (DVB) via satellite on a standard Personal Computer. They include a hardware MPEG decoder and a composite video output, so the digital TV program can be displayed both on the PC monitor and an external TV set.

The WinTV-DVB-s and WinTV-Nexus-s can receive Free-to-View channels without the need for any specialised additional equipment (see compatibility below). However, to receive 'subscriber' or 'pay per view' channels, an optional module (Common Interface Module) will be required, together with a decryption card, available, for a fee, from the provider of these channels.
Note: though DVB-s is the transmission specification for satellite pay-TV services in North America, such as Direct-TV, neither the WinTV-Nexus nor the WinTV-DVB cannot receive these broadcasts due to proprietary encryption schemes used.

Have had this card over 2 years use mostly with ritzdvb (system is motorised). Ritzdvb or Hauppauge software works great for recording/watching directly, use ritz mostly for watching recordings, find hauppauge s/ware is not necassary the best. Overall the card works great on FTA looking at buying CAM etc to watch pay TV.

This is by far the best card for FTA and encrypted satellite tv that is on the market today.

People say that it has a high cost. You get what you pay for and in this case it is no different. Other budget cards like the nova and even the junk cards like the blackbird have little to no support and if they can run programs like ProgDVB they have a hard time and cause more problems than anything else.

Do your homework and you will see over and over again one name the always is suggested and is highly praised...the nexus-s.

I have had 0 problems with it.

If you look arround for the nexus I suggest that you look for an OEM offering as it will save some cash.

rock on.

This card is a Digital Sat Receiver that allows you to capture TV-Programs. It does´t have an A/V input to capture other sources. It has an A/V output however, to connect to a TV or VCR.

You can capture TV material, convert it to the correct format and burn it to DVD or SVCD. This process isn´t a real capture, you just stream the already mpeg2- coded video material to your harddrive which gives you perfect quality.

I bought this masterpiece of a hardware more than 2 years ago and it still ROCKS!!

Since a few months this card is no more available officially, it were replaced with the Nexus card. But the Nexus is NEVER as good as the WinTV DVB-s...

What can I say??
It works best with Windows 2000 Pro./AS and W. XP Home/Pro. With Linux too. W9x and ME I cannot recommend, coz they have too many limitations and a really outdated!

But be aware, the success with this card depends on what you use as software too!

stay.tuned.
