I didn't expect that much from this hardware, but much to my surprise, it's better. I've been recording my VHS tapes with it and it works fine with the included software (Ulead VideoStudio 10 SE). The software can be a little slow when changing options and clicking on the "capture" feature---just give it a minute to respond.
