| Instant DVD for Mac is a fun, fast and easy way to get DVD and VCD video into your Macintosh so you can archive your home movies to disk or record back to VCR. Instant DVD for Mac is an external device that connects to your USB port and enables the capture of video in the proper compression format to create a Video CD or DVD disk.
Instant DVD allows the capture of video from any video source including your camcorder, VCR, DVD player, DirectTV, Tivo or Replay PVR or laser disk player. Just connect the video cables to the RCA or S-VHS jacks on Instant DVD and you are ready to digitize and compress the video in real time. Once captured you can publish movies to VideoCD or DVD disk, post on the Internet or send the video back to a VCR or camcorder for distribution on Tape. USB Instant DVD for Mac captures video from any video device in state-of-the-art MPEG-2 DVD format, which produces smooth, high-quality movies. With video in DVD format transferred to your Mac, you can: Features: Burn to a DVD-Recordable or CD-Recordable drive Archive home movies and video tapes Import captured videos into DVD Studio Pro with included plug-in Capture video and author DVD software from Pixela Play burned CD-R or DVD-R movies on most set-top DVD players Publish to the web for streaming playback *CD or DVD recordable drives required when authoring to CD or DVD discs. |

I'll add one comment. I don't know how MPEG-2 encoding quality would affect playback on a DVD player, but I find the encodes made with the ADS unit totally reliable compared with software encoding I have done. This includes the Formac MPEG-2 encoder that comes with the Studio TVR and mencoder and its various GUIs. All the ADS encodes I have done work perfectly so far, while the others tend to exhibit periodic breakup and freezes. Obviously there are many factors which affect DVD player compatibility, not least the DVD-R media, but I'm getting great results with the ADS unit. I've seen some negative comments about this device, but I have to say I am pretty impressed, especially in comparison to the other device I have used a lot, the Formac Studio TVR. The capture quality is excellent, with no sync problems even on the iBook I am using. The dynamic range of the video seems better than the Formac, without the tendency to wash out the whites. The audio quality is very nice, too, without the level calibration problem that the Formac unit has (I needed an external pre-amp to trim the levels from the VCR) Because I don't want to edit much, MPEG-2 capture makes much more sense than DV capture. The DV file size is so huge, so management of video data becomes quite an issue if you have a lot of capturing to do. With MPEG-2, you can accumulate many hours of recording before you need to start DVD burning or whatever. And of course, saving a step as slow as software MPEG-2 encoding is a huge plus. The software is not especially elegant, but it works and has a lot of useful features. Digital noise reduction and adjustments to the MPEG-2 coding is great, as is having both PAL and NTSC support. It is way better than Formac's, which has a lot of really dumb bugs and limited functionality. So, all in all, I'd say this is a pretty neat box. Quality is so-so; seems to suffer the same artifacts problem as the earlier (v1) PC version when the box begins to heat up. Some have posted hacks to add a small fan and heat sinks and reported some success. No mpeg2 for SVCD in the Mac version; that bitrate has been disabled (compared to the PC version). If you want mpeg2, you'll have to do DVD. Software sucks; Pixela doesn't "write" software, they "excrete" it. Porting PC software over to the Mac is, generally, a very bad thing; the software accompanying this box is horrid but can be made to work. I returned mine for a refund. If you want backup to dvd your old vhs movies this hardware is great. Pros: -capture mpg2 in real time (no needs reeecode to make dvds) -Very good capture quality. Max. 6mg/s -audio sync is perfect -works in usb 1.1 -captydvd is a very easy authoring software Cont: -pixedv is a very poor software to capture, it need a lot of more options, preview whithout record, a capture timer..... -you can not execute other programs when use pixedv i tested in a cube 450 mhz with 510 mg ram the preview is slow but the capture is perfect. The software pixedv has a g3 version too. regards inspector77 (alégrame el día) Comments posted by INSPECTOR77 from Other, October 04, 2003: Compatibility: |
