No problems on install after I downloaded updated drivers. Worked great, but only with Capture Wizard v3.5 supplied. Gave up getting it to work with Ulead Video Studio 7 or 8. Had a hardware failure (Error DV001) after four months, but ADS replaced it immediately and all's well for the last year. Now I capture with CapWiz and edit with Adope Premier Elements 2. Wish CapWiz was a little more flexible (for example, wish it could be scheduled) but I like the ability to have capture stop after a set number of minutes. I had the ADS Instant DVD 2.0 for about 2 weeks before I returned it. I actually was VERY happy with the quality of the captures but I returned it because the supplied software (using the latest version which I downloaded from the ADS TECH website) was not "flexible" enough for my use ... unattended scheduled capture settings. You can only set up to 1 such capture at a time. This is really a shame because the quality was VERY good. In fact the device (with a very simple "tweak" of the registry) is able to capture MPEG-2 at 15,000kbps with "I" frames only. I did many captures this way with 384kbps MP2 audio. This is a nice way to get a "master" capture so that you can edit and then re-encode with a software MPEG-2 DVD spec encoder such as CCE or TMPGEnc Plus. This is how I mostly used it although there were some TV captures where I captured directly to a DVD spec file. Picture quality was always very good and even though I always demuxed and converted the audio to AC-3 I never experienced any A/V sync issues. I mostly used MPEG-VCR for edits unless I was re-encoding then I used an AviSynth script. Please note that for locked audio you must use MP2 audio and capture to a muxed MPEG file. You can capture to a separate video and audio file if using MP2 and even PCM is possible but the locked audio support does not work then. I always captured with MP2 muxed for lock audio support. Also the unit can get very hot and this may cause capture issues such as A/V sync issues. Raise the unit up on make-shift legs and put a (very small) fan on it. Heat issue solved. I tested the unit with VHS and DVD sources that were copy protected and it never had a problem with a capture so it must ignore copy protection ... a nice plus! Other than the lack of scheduled recording options I give this unit a "10" Comments posted by John Coleman from United States, January 28, 2006: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Win2K? WinXP Vista? NT4? Bought this after returning the Avermedia USB pro. This installed without a hitch and I was capturing within 10 minutes. I downloaded the latest capture & editing software from their web site and everything is working well. I really like the different capture quality levels, they have a good documentation on what levels to use if you want a DVD, etc. I would definitely recommend this. This thing never worked for me on my brand new computer. The device was not recognized by Windows XP, it crashed when I installed, and never captured a second of video. I received No tech support from ADS, so rather than try to be Mr. Tech Guy, I did the smart thing and returned it and got the Canopus ADVC-100 instead, which I had up and running minutes after opening the box, and which is still working great. Stay away from ADS products. Comments posted by aaron from United States, April 12, 2004: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Win2K? |

I have had this unit for about 4 months now. Originally I was going to connect and capture from a Win2K Pro desktop, but I had some driver conflict issue with the Instant DVD 2 (from here on out IDVD2) and a PCI card previously installed (Provideo PV256T - BTW, a very nice capture card). So my wife got a new laptop for X-mas (from me of course) and that is where I loaded and captured from the IDVD2. Specs: P4 - Win XP Home - 2.8GHz - 512MB RAM - 40GB HD - DVD/CD-R/RW Dishnetwork receiver connected to IDVD2 via monster s-video/audio cable connected to USB2 laptop I was ready to capture within 10 minutes of loading then CD-R into the drive, as everything loaded smoothly, just as detailed in the included manual. I did not load additional software on the disk, as I am not a big fan of Ulead. The unit ships with the capture software called CapWiz 3.0. After loading, I uninstalled CapWiz 3.0 and downloaded and installed CapWiz 3.0.5. The included Ulead products VideoStudio 7SE and Movie Factory 2, can also capture MPEG from this unit. My test capture was a 2 hour 5 minute movie on Cinemax (Glory). So I used a DVD template (720x480) with 4.5Mbps (CBR) and 224kbps audio @ 48000Hz. That setting was good enough for a good looking picture quality and able to fit on a DVD-R. First thing about the IDVD2 that you notice is that it is very easy to use and set-up to your specification. The preview window is 1000 times better than the previous IDVD1 version, and CapWiz has a no-nonsense capture-config screen. I adjusted the saturation, hue, contrast and brightness level to my liking. Another nice feature in IDVD2 is when you hit the RECORD button, it begins immediately. The IDVD1 has a 6-7 second delay before recording, which was really annoying. You also have the choice of capturing a multiplexed MPEG or de-multiplex (separate audio and video) MPEG files. So 2 hours 2 minutes later, I hit STOP button. I play back immediately and WOW,,,, what a nice looking cap!!! I authored immediately in SpruceUp and burned within an hour and was watching it on my 32" SONY. WOW!!!! I could not tell the difference from the original. It was just great!!! One negative to report so far is the heat on the unit. After 2 hours and 2 minutes the unit was giving off some serious heat. I could see this being an issue on longer tha 2 hour captures. The heat could cause synch problems with you audio and video, so that is one thing to look out for. All in all, a great experience so far. I recommend it. I will report more as I do more tests with half-DVD, SVCD and test the VBR encoding. I will not do VCD, as I do not expect much good to come of that. Mostly upset with ADS attitude about compatability. Unit is OK but will only work with Ulead Video Studio 7.0. I have Media Studio Pro 7.0 and with this card installed it crashes Video Capture. ADS response so far has been, to bad, that's the way the cookie crumbles. What I find upsetting is simply that the card may not work with a program but to cause a program to fail just because the unit is installed is wrong. I will no longer support ADS or their products and am still looking for a unit that works well with Media Studio Pro. Comments posted by Gary W. Do not confuse the IDVD-1 with the IDVD-2. The ver 1 unit was unstable and lots of problems Ver 2 seems stable and has preformed well for me. Over 100 conversions from vhs to dvd-r and from tv. I have not done any editing (lazy). Some as long as 3 1/2 hrs with good playback on dvd/tv setup installation for me went well and easy. simple interface and basic use of bundled software work well. Can not comment of advanced use as have not tried any. Have used under win98-se, winme and win xp-pro(?) most early problems were corrected when I realized my high end maxtor hdd was only operating at 3mb/s throughput Comments posted by Dennis McClanahan from Other, December 26, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Received the unit, but have had nothing but problems with this. I am using XP Pro and have loaded the latest updates from ADS Tech, in addition DirectX. So far, my problems are: 1) Noticed that when capturing long segments (greater than 30 min), that the audio is not synched. 2) CapWiz crashes whenever I try exporting to my VCR/TV. It will playback to the computer with no problem though. As this is the main reason I bought the unit, major problem. If I can't sort out the issues soon, guess I will have to return it. Apparently, most of the other people who have submitted reviews don't understand the concept of initial capture vs. final product and the importance of bitrate. This is a wonderful device for capturing 4:2:0 NTSC or PAL from composite or s-video connections. Audio is hardware locked and sampled through the same device. Complaints about VBR size of initial capture are ridiculous. There is no reliable way to do VBR on-the-fly with a streaming source. The only way to get quality is multi-pass post-processing of a capture. It's the same with any capture device, regardless of cost. Capture at a very high bitrate then downmix using good tools, not those which are bundled. A HUGE benefit of MPEG2 caputre compared to DV capture, the other primary external capture method, is the NTSC color model. DV uses 4:1:1 which has one chroma sample for 4 horizontal pixels. IT's a lousy model for sharp edges, TV bugs, etc. The only thing I've had to do with this device is adjust the sampling values for proper birghtness, chroma, etc. with poor quality videotape source. For the price the ADS IDVD2 is pretty good. But, do not expect pro level results. The following is only about the device itself, NOT about the bundled software. SOME POSITIVE POINTS: The default filtering does a great job of cleaning up VHS tapes, but doesn't blur the picture the way the IDVD1 did. The problems with pixellation, heat, and audio sync that the IDVD1 had are gone as well. The installation was easy, and there have been a few updates of the software made available at the ADS website. The MPEG files work well with ULEAD Video Studio, even when using Smartrender. SOME NEGATIVE POINTS: After using the unit for a few months and bantering back and forth with support: The unit had some brightness flickering problems that were solved by a Capwiz upgrade. However, to eliminate the flicker, the input type often needs to be set to VCR, which causes problems with bright parts of the picture getting too saturated and losing detail. Rarely, the audio can actually end up slightly AHEAD of the video. It doesn't happen often, and doesn't seem to be source related. At the default bitrate of 4 mbps, crossfades and certain types of fast motion in the source can look extremely pixellated in the resulting MPEG2 file. The VBR options don't seem to really help with reducing file size. Comments posted by rphunt from Other, November 29, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Win2K? WinXP Vista? NT4? MAC? ok, "ADS Instant DVD USB 2.0", same as my experience with the adaptec videoh!, the box is great, the software sorta sux :( well, capture wizard doesn't 'suck', but how in the heck could you leave out a scheduler in your capture software? i mean, imagine buying a VCR without a scheduler for recordings! <sigh> otherwise, capture wizard is excellent, lots of control over recordings with 'pro' features, like interlacing options and ability to record with linear audio. my *only* gripe is the lack of scheduling. if ADS made a TV Tuner model i'm sure CapWiz would suddenly get scheduling :/ i just recorded "Henry V" off of IFC channel (digital cable) with this. movie was 2h20m, and i used 720x480, 4Mbps. quality is excellent, perfect audio sync, and it all fit on one DVD-R. i use "TMPG DVD Author" to convert (author) the MPEG2 files to DVD format (vob files) and add chapter points and menus. My prior capture experiences were with a generic PCI TV tuner card (320x240 max size for full frame rate), and an AverMedia PCI "Instant DVD" card - no tuner, but a 720x480 full rate frame size (when using the supplied software) and software encoding. I've had pretty good luck with the ADS Instant DVD 2.0 (ADS USBAV-702), running under XP pro on a 500 MB P4 2.8 Ghz, even when capturing to an external USB 2.0 120 GB drive (the ADS box & the drive are on seperate "root" connectors). The on-board encoding keeps CPU utilization low enough, even at high bit rates, that I can do other things on the PC while the capture proceeds (if needed). Sound sync has been dead on, even on 3 hour+ captures. That was a first for me ... good sync without recoding. 4 Mb/sec 1/2D DVD recordings play just fine on my Pioneer set top player, as do 5/6/7/8 Mb/sec VBR DVD products. The SVCD and VCD discs have also worked just fine. The 3.0.0.5 capwiz app has a pretty fair amount of flexibility with timed captures, and a variety of options for capture characteristics. I've been using the composite inputs, exclusively, so far for VHS transfers. I have not yet tried the output option. No WDM drivers (that I've found...) so you are stuck with the applications provided. I have yet to find a use for the "muvee" package, but the Ulead apps (video studio & movie factory) have been OK. I had some installation issues with them, but eventually got everything working OK. The Ulead apps have been adequate for my editing requirements (trimming out commercials & trimming before and after excess). Re-render times (when needed) have not been too bad - roughly the same as the capture time. The safest approach for me has been to create image files (iso) and then burning the disc as a seperate operation ... less likely to get a coaster. I purchased from a local circuit city, so I could return it if it didn't work out. After 2 weeks of testing I figured it was worth the money. ALL, You may want to wait until ADSTech releases Capwiz 3.0.5 version of the capture software and associated drivers, before frustrating yourselves ant further with this premature device. They are working on it and should fix many problems users are facing. Release will probably be within 2 weeks or so. Just keep their website. I purchased ADS Insatnt DVD 1.5 in March of 2003. It is now August of 2003, i have been upgraded to version 2.0, but i am sytill having sound problems. The 1st version would not sync up my video/sound. Plus i had trouble exporting back to VCR. With the upgrade, (personally i liked VideoStudio 6 better than 7) I can capture fine, edit fine, and export fine...with the exception of SOUND!!! Tech services is baffled. If i export the little "clock" demo clip included with software, if looks and sound fine. But any footage that I capture that i shot had no sound to it???!!! If I could fix the sound problem, i'd be happy. Oh, yea...one more thing. I have noticed that if i am exporting several clips in a row, the picture freezes up(?) Not sure what that is about. The problem i see, is that every product out there (in this price range) has its problems with someone. None of them seem to work 100% like they should. Why can't they produce a product THAT WORKS? Bottom line...it's been 5 months since i first began my editing adventures. I am growing tired. Just wish I had the money to spend on sometinmg more reliable. Don't even try anything before installing heatsinks on all, I mean all IC-s. Those parts run so hot you can fry your fingers on. I did the following modifications to my unit: I removed the board from the plastic case. Removed the voltage regulators from the board, glued heatsinks an all surface mounted IC-s, installed the board in a larger metal casing and mounted the voltage regulator on the side of the case with insulators. I also installed a small 12V CPU fan running on 5V. Before the modification I could capture maximum 15 minutes, after I run it in capture mode for 8 hrs without any problems. I also had problems with Ulead Studio 7 but it works with the 2 other programs. This is a unit with good components and bad engineering. After the problems I experienced, that are entered below... I called ADS tech support, 562.926.4338. The person I spoke with asked that I: 1. Try the device with an S-Video cable, despite the fact the most VCRs don't use S-Video. 2. Use the composite cables supplied by ADS, despite the fact that I stated the cables I use work fine with other devices, incl. the original Instant DVD. 3. That I uninstall and reinstall all hte software. I did all this and called back and spoke with someone else. They asked that I install the latest update of the Capture Wizard software, 3.0.0.3. I did that with them on the phone. Still had the flicker problem. The support person promised to escalate the problem to engineering. He said that if a firmware fix is needed, it is supplied via a Capture Wizard update (interesting). I had to nudge him to get his email address, and to give him my contact info, and to get the case number. I'm going to now uninstall the Instant DVD 2.0, and give them a call next week. I received the ADS Instant DVD 2.0, after experiencing the problem I describe in a previous entry. I installed it and the Capture Wizard software OK. It insisted I install DirectX 9.0 as well (supplied). From the start, the captures (DVD 4mbps) had a flutter in the brightness no matter if the source is cable, VCR, or DVD. It's not macrovision, it's too erratic, and doesn't clear up when using the SIMA Copymaster. It seems to be an unstable AGC, similar to the Dazzle DVC2. The unit still runs very hot (a problem the 1.5 had). I'll be contacting ADC to find out what this is about. It's too bad, as the video looks pretty good otherwise(much better than the Snazzi), and the audio seems to be sync'd up better than the 1.5. On top of that, now my Ulead DVD Workshop and Video Studio crash whan they try to open the capture device. Comments posted by rphunt from Other, June 16, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Win2K? I received a mailing from ADS Technologies promoting the ADS Instant DVD 2.0, as I own the 1.5. Apparently the 2.0 handles the audio compression through hardware now, as opposed to the 1.5 which brought audio in through the PC's sound card, then compressed using software. I emailed ADS to confirm, and to ask whether the heat problems of the 1.5 were resolved in the 2.0. No response of course. I ordered the unit anyway, using a discount coupon code supplied by the mailing ($70 off). I then received a confirmation showing I was paying full price. I called ADS, and supposedly straightened that out. I then received a box from ADS containing a 1.5. I called ADS and am now awaiting a 2.0, and an RMA slip to return the 1.5. Then we'll see. I also check ADS Technologies out at the Better Business Bureau: "Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau....In this case, our complaint history for this company shows a pattern of unanswered and unresolved customer complaints. In those cases where the company has responded to the complaints brought to its attention by the Bureau, some remain unresolved because it appears that the company did not give adequate consideration to the customer's side of the dispute." I'm also thinking about getting a Canopus MPEGPro EMR. The extra cost might be worth it to avoid the aggravation. Comments posted by rphunt from Other, June 10, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Ok, where do I start. How about.....DONT GET THIS JUNK!!! That is kinda unfair, as everyone has to make their own judgements. Here is mine. I bought this unit as a replacement for my WinTV PVR-250. Comes armed with USB 2.0 in a breakout box (naturally), ADSTech CapWiz (for capping), Ulead Moviefactory 2.0 SE and Video Studio 7 SE and MuVee software. First hiccup was I could not start VideoStudio without getting an error. Email to Ulead was a waste of time. There natural response is take your computer out back, shoot it, stomp it, put it back together, then load VideoStudio before anything else (ooohhh brother!!!). Besides that, Capwiz is very easy to set up and initialize. Captures in standard VCD, SVCD (CBR & VBR) and DVD full and half (CBR and VBR). Now the crux of the whole thing. If you have to cut a captured file you are in for a piece of trouble. My first cap was CSPAN (3 hrs) of Noam Chomsky in standard VCD (CBR). I want to put it on CD-R, so I have to cut it. I demux the audio/video with TMPG and dropped it into BBMPEG for precise cutting. It chokes BBMPEG and the resulting burn to CD-R has stuttering video. Next I tried half DVD with VBR 3.0 Mbps. I calculated how much would fit on 1 CD-R. I made sure I stopped capture right on the button. Resulting file is too big for CD-R. So now I am getting angry. I demux and re-encoded the audio in BSweet from 192 to 160 kbps. I muxed new audio with video in TMPG which gived me an underflow error. WTF!!!! I burn anyway and throw into my Daewoo 5700 (cool machine) and........wallah.....stuttering video playback. So it goes back to the store for full refund. It appears that if you cant burn the stream delivered by Instant DVD 2.0, there is no recourse. It is adding some overhead in the *.mpg stream which makes the file larger than it should be. No more of this monkeying around with cheap $100 to $200 direct mpeg 1 and 2 capture devices for me. I am stepping up to the Canopus MVR-1000 ($699). I figure if I start saving now, I should be able to get it by Christmas :) Try the ADSTech Instant DVD2.0 at your own risk. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!
