I can't get my capture card to play nice with Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate - I've tried toggling USB drivers, unplugging all USB stuff and plugging the capture device back in - Pinnacle Forum suggested contacting ADSTech for help.

I see some of you got this thing to work on Vista. I have a posting in the Capturing forum titled
"DVD Xpress DX2 on Vista" and would appreciate it if those who got this to work could check my post and possibly tell me what I need to do.

It was a breeze to install (even on vista, after downloading beta drivers). So far I have tested it on commercial DVD's with phono connections, and have found that the capture quality is very good, nearly as good as the DVD itself however there is some notable differences in colour, and also find that it is a little pixelated, especially on fast moving scenes.

My understanding is that when a DVD is played back it plays at 8mbps, however the ADS TECH DX2 capture rate is 2.5mbps (the outputted mpeg 2 file is 8mbps). Perhaps I'm not understanding this correctly but surely a capture card has to capture at 8mbps to perform accurate conversions? Like I say, the capture quality is good for what it is but if you're looking to replicate those DVD's then look else where, or just use your PC :)

I actually brought this product for converting VHS but found that my VCR does not have the correct connections, so this is something to watch out for.

The beta drivers were a bitch to install on my Vista 64 system, but once installed and once I played around with the input signals, it was jamming (granted I have an AMD dual core and 2 gigs of RAM which is usefull..!! Very good deal for $59 at Walmart!...

It does most of its job well. As others have said, the drivers are proprietary, and can only capture to supplied software. Capturing to divx is ok quality, but its best is mpeg2. I used this to capture old analog home movies, and when recording in mpeg2 I had no trouble with the quality. I did not run into the size and time limits that the previous used had trouble with, as some of my tapes were 3 hours in length. I did however have trouble first installing the device, but once it was working I had no further trouble.

As a short comment to Rod. The 2 GB limit is a limit imposed by the AVI format. It has nothing to do with this piece of hardware or software.

The proprietary software CapWiz imposes an unbreakable 2GB limit on DivX capture, irrespective of bit rate. The bundled Ulead Video Studio 9 is similar crippled, with a fixed limit of 119 minutes on DivX capture, again at all available bitrates. I've not been able to find any non-proprietary capture software that will work with this device (not even CaptureFlux, which claims to know about DVD Xpress DX2). As frequently noted here and elsewhere, ADS tech support doesn't exist. For short clips it seems to do OK, pretty good video quality, good audio sync. But with these arbitrary length restrictions it's effectively useless for serious archiving.

The hardware has potential for a good picture even from a very noisy and shaky old VHS recording taken in through the composite connection. However the default settings of CapWiz software produce extremely big files. In their guidance text ADS mention that DivX is likely to give 1 hour for each 725 MB used. In practice the software stops the recording at 2 GB and then I have around 40 minutes of video converted. Needless to say, this around 7000 kbits/second bitrate is not playable by many standalone units. After reconverting it with software DivX encoder, I have a very high quality video, compressed as much as needed. The same (high bitrates) applies to MPEG2 encoding as well. In that case the quality is not very good either. When using the custom fixed bitrate settings, smaller DivX files can be produced. The "BEST" setting gives around 4400 kbit/s for PAL Home Theater setting, which is slightly over the official Home Theater limit and can still produce problems with some players. The "VERY GOOD" setting is around 2600 kbit/s and easily playable, but with noticeably lower quality.
This would be an excellent piece of hardware, if the software would let me control the parameters more accurately, or if the presets were more sensible.
All this applies to bad quality originals. I would suppose smooth DVDs could be much easier to compress even with the default quality (not bitrate) guided settings.
ADStech support is as good as dead. Impossible to contact.

I have spent two days now trying to get my HP desktop to "see" the DVDXpressDX2 unit. No matter what I do, uninstall, etc., my computer just doesn't recognize it. When I run the software, it tells me, by error messages, that my USB device is missing its driver. But XP will not install a driver unless it first recognizes that a new device is present.

I am out of time and patience, and will send it back to retailer. I will instead buy a pci capture card.

DVDxpressDX2 fails to record in DIVX/MPEG-4. Their support sux. I can record just fine in DVD format (MPEG-2) -- smooth as glass with no discernable lip sync problems at all (640x480 and 480x480). But when trying to record in DIVX (or for ZEN VISION) you get audio but video freezes for a second or two then you get another frame or two then freezes for another second or two, etc. WHY. Even if you make the capture size tiny tiny tiny. This product fails. It should have a problem (if any) with the higher bit rates of MPEG-2 not the lower bit rate DIVX/portable formats. Can never get ahold of their support.

I had a few small hassels installing the usb driver but when I got the software going it worked fine, the video quality is allmost as good as the sorce and compared to my old pinnacle DC10plus card its better all round, one hint to new users on this ads/dx2 is don't turn up the sharpness setting beyond about 4 on the sliding scale as you will get a lot of pixelation and jerking of the image, and allso I found the dvd burning tends to crash,so i run nero 6 as the dvd file burning and get no hassels.
Overall it does a really good job with picture quality allmost as good as the original and if you are prepared to fiddle with the settings a bit you will get pretty good results..
PS the image it very slightly hazy to the original but this could be the video cables causing some slight loss, hope this feedback helps..

PRO:

The DX2 is lightweight, portable, and is USB powered. The unit has S-Video and RCA/Composite inputs. This is a hardware encoder, so it uses limited computer resources during capture.

Video quality is very good. I did not experience any dropped frames and the audio and video were always in sync. I have captured from DVR, VHS, and Hi-8 video camera. My captures ranged from 2 minutes to 2 hours. I did not experince any heat problems with this device.

Capture formats are MPEG-1, MPEG-2, AVI, DivX (MP4). The supplied Ulead software can also recode (but not capture) to WMV.

CON:

ADS included their own proprietary capture software called CapWiz. This is capture only and has no editing capabilities. The software is functional as a capture utility, but it could be greatly improved.
My major complaints with this software:

1. No editing - I have to open a second program to trim/clean up the beginning and end of my video.
2. The software is full screen and can not be resized. This is annoying, especially since there is wasted space in the program interface.

Ulead Video Studio is also included (version 9 as of May 2006). This software can be used to capture and edit video. This software is decent, and more than adequate for a novice, but better options may be available for advanced users.

The biggest drawback of this device is that you can capture ONLY with the supplied programs. Other programs (Nero, other Ulead products, etc) WILL NOT capture from this device.

Once you capture with the supplied software, you can edit or recode with any software of your choice.

OVERALL:

I am very satisfied with this product. The captures are good quality and it doesn't put a strain on my computer. It is simple to use and easy to take it with me and connect to my laptop. The only thing that would make this product better would be freedom to use the capture software of my choice and basic editing features in the CapWiz software.
