If all you want to do is transfer unedited video to CD or DVD, this combination works. I wanted more, specifically edit capability that works. Even the PC Mag article warned that the Arcsoft Showbiz product should be replaced - they just forgot to mention that NOTHING else works with the AVC-2210 provided by Adaptec. Studio 8 sees it but can't use it. Arcsoft is really disfunctional and slow, not to mention buggy. Here's the real Adaptec insult to it's users: The Arcsoft update from their website is NOT for bundled versions and may damage them; and the MyDVD update to Version 5 will not support the AVC-2210. What you get in the box is what you get, period. Had mine too long before I figured out I was screwed so I couldn't return it. What a waste and what a mess. My "3" rating is generous and only if you just want straight transfer. Comments posted by Gary from Other, December 10, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Win2K? WinXP Vista? NT4? MAC? RE: Dave Thomas's comments below.. He's 100% right. I've had both this Adaptec unit and the DVD Media Center. Both have been a PITA to work with as they provide such limited choices for capturing, and very limited choices of MPEG encoding parameters (e.g. LPCM audio only on the Media Center) that transcoding is almost always needed. Don't waste your time, buy an external DV encoder instead. The gold standard is the Canopus ADVC-100, but these retail for $300 and are rarely found cheaper than $250. Instead, I bought an ADS Pyro A/V Link from buy.com for $150. All I can say is - Wow, wish I'd done this ages ago. It takes component, composite, and S-Video inputs and converts them to DV, which goes into the PC via the 1394 interface. Since all A/V capture/edit/burn programs take DV input, you have total compatability, and with programs like Ulead VideoStudio 7, you can encode on-the-fly to MPEG-2 or MPEG-1 in exactly the format you want, with no A/V desynchronization (hardware locked by the ADS) and much better source quality. My ADS had cut the time I spend producing video by half and it's better quality, to boot. Get one and chuck your Adaptec on ebay. MovieMill DOES work with AVC-2200 - and works well. MYDVD 5 - does not, but with the MovieMill->TMPEG->MyDVD 5 I could produce great 160 minutes DVD from 160 min VHS. I bought this so that I could convert some of the videos I have to DVD. I used the bundled Sonic MyDVD to do the capturing, but it would only let me capture just over an hour of video. Also once the file size reached 4gb it said that I had reached the maximum file size for my system. I find this hard to believe as the hard drives in my system are NTSF not FAT32, so the file size is limited to the hard drive size and the amount of free space on it. I have over 80gb of free space on the partition I was capturing the file to. It also appears this hardware will only work with the bundled software, these being Sonic MyDVD v4 and WinDVR v3. I tried other capture software, such as Adobe Premiere 6.5, Emuzed Movie Mill, Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2, VirtualDub etc., to try to overcome this file size error but none of them recognised the hardware. I even tried version 5 of Sonic MyDVD and even it did not recognise it. Anyway, I took it back to the shop I bought it from and got a full refund. I am now looking for a cheap Canopus ADVC-100 as I've heard some very good things about it. Comments posted by Dave Thomas from Other, November 14, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Win2K? I just purchased the VideOh 2210, and I"m quite unhappy with MyDVD 4.5. I tried to upgrade to MyDVD 5, but it does not recognize the device. Nor does Movie Mill does not seem to recognize the capture device. When I emailed Adaptec I received a response saying that the only software that works with the device is the software that was bundled with it, which is MyDVD 4.5. But clearly, the Sonic people don't know that they're supposed to be compatible with Adaptec, since their most recent versions don't support it! This has me very frustrated, and I'm thinking of scrapping the Adaptec and trying the Snazzi III, so I can at least use Movie Mill. I'm a newbee. I've had Videoh! for about a week now. I've burned a DVD+RW, a DVD+R, And a VCD with only a few problems. Mainly lack of experience I think. I re-did some old 8mm video using my new Sony Hi8 camcorder as a player and the MYDVD software. The discs all look at least as good as the old tapes and sound better because the new camcorder has stereo sound instead of one channel. I got the Media Center. I don't know if it's packaged differently from the others or not. Mine has an on-off switch so I can leave it plugged in all the time. I only gave it a 6 because I'm still learning with it. I think once I pick up on some of the hints and tips from this site, it'll be great. Comments posted by Russ from Other, October 13, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Win2K? WinXP Vista? NT4? MAC? I have had the Adaptec Videoh! Dvd for since earlier this year. It may be the older chip version so all these comments may not apply. Having read the comments here, it is clear that the issues with this product have a lot to do with the software. Here is what I found while evaluating other sofware and older drivers. My objective had been to create compliant dvd's with mpeg2-vbr video with ac3 audio. As recommended here, Movie Mill is very good for capturing in mpeg2-vbr. That went well. The comment that the older driver 3.10.26.0 would allow higher bit rate captures had mixed results. With Ulead Movie Factory 2 and MyDvd 5.0 Deluxe, the old driver caused captures which when imported into these programs had chapter points that shifted. In MyDvd 5.0 the shifts appeared in the preview, but in Movie Factory 2, the shifts occurred after burning. Two programs, Tmpg Author and Dvd-lab, were not affected and worked well. Dvd-lab's drawback was that its burning function did not work. I also tried SpruceUp but that program would not start. I settled for MyDvd 5.0 Deluxe. It does not capture but if the 3.14.37.0 driver is used and Movie Mill set for minimum 6 MB/s capture in vbr mode, MyDvd 5.0 Deluxe can create a burned dvd with the mpeg1, layer 2 audio from Movie Mill transcoded to ac3 (Dolby Digital) and the mpeg2-vbr video without re-encoding. The average data rate upon playback on a Panasonic S35 player indicates it is about 5.2 MB/s so it cannot achieve the rate set in Movie Mill. My commercial dvd's show a average data rate about 6 MB/s. Comments posted by trhouse from Other, September 18, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Win2K? WinXP Vista? NT4? MAC? I tried the Adaptec VideOh! and was very dissaponted. Installation was easy and the device was working fine. However, supported 6000 KB/sec max encoding is too low. Someone suggested using MovieMill with old Adaptec drivers to reach at least 8000 kb/sec. The price was attractive, so I spend whole day trying to "mix and match" different versions of drivers and MovieMill, no luck. The supplied software package is rediculous. On top of everything, it does something to Ulead capture drivers, resulting in problems in my ULead DVD Workshop 1.2. I also tried similar product from Dazzle, but had to return because their soft did not work on my machine. Now I've got Pinnacle Studio MovieBox USB2.0 and very happy. First of all, it has software package that actually works. Encoding at 8000 kb/sec is great. Highly recommend Comments posted by Olga from Other, September 02, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? One of several capture solutions I am returning to store, in attempt to convert Secam tapes over to NTSC DVD. The version I bought is a "new version", with a newer Mpeg chip. The good: - really simple to setup - USB 2.0 - excellent video quality - ignores Macrovision The bad: - capture more than 45 mins and the sound gets out of sync, by up to 2 secs. - MovieMill will simply not work with this new chip version. The only thing that works is the Dvd-It software included which really is underpar for the cost of the solution - going back to the store... Hi I am from Mexico, and I recently buy this card to use like a home-business to transfer VHS or analog video to DVD, And I think this card is good because no so expensive, easy to use, but I didnt give a 10 because the software, I already had Mydvd software from my dvd burner (sony dru500) and I like showbiz because fx, but still need a lot of improvements... I download Mill to capture the video and not problems. Comments posted by Jorge from Other, July 31, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Win2K WinXP? Vista? NT4? MAC? Linux? - Rated: 9 of 10. |

I connected the device to my computer (2GHz celeron,256MB,40GB drive,USB2.0, all available service packs). I installed all the software. I connected a VCR to the input, started a 20 year old VHS tape, and recorded two hours straight to disk without a single problem. I love this device. This is a very usefull card with MovieMill 2.0 Buld 260, NOT with the original SW!!!! ATTENTION!!! Please don't install the new Driver 3.14.37 from Adaptec. Also don't use MovieMill 2.1! The new Adaptec driver reduces the max data rate to approx 6,3 MB/s. So, NO real DVD quality is possible. With the old (original) driver on the CD v 3.10.26 you can reach up to 10 MB/s. But on this value some times the picture freezes! 8 MB/s is good quality and works fine! The MovieMill 2.1 has some problems to recognize video signal. So use v2.0 Comments posted by DaRealRocker from Other, July 17, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? Win98? Win2K? WinXP Vista? NT4? MAC? Linux? - Rated: 8 of 10. |

The quick and easy software that comes with it is nearly useless. Inorder to get the best captures of your video tapes I suggest you go out and buy a supervhs vcr (they have a s-video output for the best possible video signal) and a USB 2.0 card (if your computer doesnt already have one.) The best capture setting for this unit can be achieved using a movie mill software (you will ned a usb 2.0 to capture over 4mbps). Set the movie mill mpg-2 and push the slider all the way over to 8mbps. this will get you what looks like video i have pulled into the DV camcorder.(this means sharp, and in focus). When you transfer this down to mpeg-1 for your vcd you will see that it looks about a million times better than the real video tape. to reencode down to vcd, or even dvd i suggest getting ulead mediastudio pro 7.0. I downloaded the trial version to see if it works good with the device. now although it dosent capture you can edit very nicly with it Comments posted by irwin from Other, April 03, 2003: Compatibility: Win95? This is the worst capture card I have used. It is way overpriced for the kind of capture quality that you get. I bought this card from Frys for 179.95. The video capture with this card has many horizontal lines that is very visible making the video looking very ugly. This is so even under "best" quality mode. Don't buy this card. It's a piece of crap. I bought this card because I though Adaptec is a quality brand, but it is obviously not. Adaptec doesn't have experience in this field like others. Bad capture freeze problem with MovieMill 1.271 with a Dell Lattitude C800 (850MHz). After 6 consecutive failures to capture a 20 min segment, I installed MovieMill 2.0 Build 271 USB from www.snazzi.com and I was able to get the capture. The included drivers would not bind to the Adaptec hardware, but MovieMill 2.0 would bind to the Adaptec drivers. Snazzi hardware has a second composite input, but I was using S-video. Anyone considering the Adaptec Videoh DVD might well consider buying the Snazzi product instead. There's an ad on the home page of dvdrhelp! Installed a Belkin USB 2.0 card and then the Videoh USB. Install of both on XP SP1 was no problem. Have been able to capture using composite with no problems. Capturing using Movie Mill, then importing to Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2, again no problems. I have no problems with the unit at all. Picture quality is very good, no a/v synch problems, and at least for me no problems importing captured mpegs to other programs. I give it a 9 only because it has no power switch, and somtimes I have to unplug it and plug it back in (at the back of the unit) to get it to lock on the composite video input, and so it doesn't stay on all the time. I decided not to install MyDvd after reading here and went strictly with Movie Mill for capture. Ulead offers the Videoh as a capture device, but when I try to switch to it, I get an error stating the device is already in use. No big deal, since I have had no problems importing from Movie Mill. Celeron 1GHz tower's power supply died; replace and a 120GB slave HDD added. Decided to try "Raiders" again. Sonic MyDVD 4 and VideOh! captured side one just fine, then capture stopped part way through side two. Edited MyDVD chapter stops while waiting for the unit (and me) to cool off. Side two capture went as uneventfully as side one. (Sucess?) Sent clips to ShowBiz for trimming and producing. 6.5 hours later, I had a movie to send back to MyDVD. Connected up Sony DRX-500UL and went through various menus to check settings and set region when MyDVD didn't see it. Oops! I forgot to save the chapter stop version last night! Went back to ShowBiz and sent the produced movie to MyDVD for a "no stop" version. Burning a DVD-R on the Sony unit took about 35 minutes and plays fine on Panasonic DVD-RV32. Success? I first installed this on one PC running with an Elite K7S5A board with an Athlon XP2000. Install was OK, but I kept getting the problem with the device stopping the capture in the middle of what I was trying to record. I tried updating the driver which resulted in the device not working at all. I then went a bought a USB 2.0 PCI card, and had the same result. I have since moved the device to another PC with an ABit SA7 board and Celeron 1700 and it works fine apart from the AV sync issue, which gets worse the longer the film goes on. I really like the Videoh now it is working, and just need to sort out this AV sync issue. Would like to see the ability to add different videos to a project before making the VOB's etc, and better control over menu's. Have just downloaded Video Mill so fingers crossed. Using Movie Mill with the Adaptec Videoh DVD has solved most of my problems. MYDVD was too limited in the settings and caused me to constantly redo the video to get the bit rates I wanted. SVCD is also now natively supported (I have not tested this, however, since I now create DVDs). With Movie Mill I can control the bit rate of capture. It also allows me to lower the saturation, which the default is way too high (98 according to the program)... I set it to 60 and video looks great. I also noticed that video captured can be properly edited using TMPGENC. MYDVD captures edited using this program would lose lip sync. Now I can edit and merge segments seamlessly without re-encoding! Finally, I feel that the product fulfills my expectations of an MPEG2 capture card. Bottom line. With Movie Mill, highly recommended! Unit worked fine with internal Teac 24X CDRW and Verbatim CD-Rs to create VCDs and a SVCD. (Panasonic A-110 saw neither; RV32 saw the former but not the latter.) SVCD played OK on Mac PowerBook Pismo DVD drive. Decided to get a DVD burner: Sony DRX-500UL, to put Laserdisc version of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" on DVD. Tried 3 times, unit stopped capturing 2 times. Sony bundled Sonic MyDVD captured video OK, set up chapter points on the "side1/side2" .mpeg segments. However, "Burn" button greyed out when Sony plugged in via USB 2 port. (MyDVD 4.01 "Burn" button ungreyed when unit NOT plugged in.) Does DVD port (via PCI combo card) work? (Windows XP sees it OK.) So, VCDs yes, DVDs no. Looking at Canopus ADVC 100 on eBay and stable software package. (1GHz Celeron clone tower, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD too basic?) Also with the Movie Mill I cannot get the thing working properly. On one PC the AV sync is simply not there (the video is gettinhg more and more in advance of the sound. On another machine XP(fresh installed; no other sofware present)gets completely blocked; only unplugging the power of the PC helps. Giant thanks to fleetc! The link to movie mill software allowed for a first time - full length (93 min.) capture from VHS to mpeg2 - something I was unable to accomplish with Ads Instant DVD or Pinnacle capture card (both stopped capturing after random times, usually about 20 minutes.) Resulting capture was perfectly synched throughout. If you're even thinking of POSSIBLY trying this box, grab the movie mill file because mydvd was near useless. If you've experienced a/v synch problems with any cards or boxes that grab sound through your sound card, the vidoeoh! dvd is your answer (or it's been mine, so far.) The only drawback I've had is that for some reason files generated with it will not open in Ulead DVD Workshop (it closes immediately on trying) although they can be opened in Ulead Studio 6, so I'm stumped by that. I haven't managed yet to get either program to capture directly - not a worry so long as I use movie mill. If I can solve the DVDWS snafu I will finally have the set up I've been searching for after so long. = recommended, if used with movie mill - using win me, P4 1.7 ghz, 256 mem, 40 gig dedicated udml h/d, adaptec duoconnect usb2/firewire Comments posted by G. As you can see in my previous comment, I was hit hard by the Stop Capture problem. It annoyed me so much I emailed Adaptec, Emuzed Inc(Who built it for Adaptec), and Sonic. Adaptec responded with a plea of ignorance, No reply from Sonic, but I got this reply from Emuzed. Adaptec’s technical support should have told you that, but Adaptec is getting ready major update to the products that will address a lot of issues including the intermittent stop of the capture. Please keep checking their web site. You should see the update before the end of this month. As a bonus and in appreciation of your patience here is the link to the MovieMill application developed by Emuzed that will enable you to capture from the card: http://209.81.58.102/releases/MovieMill1_271.zip Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly if you encounter any problems with the application. Best regards, Vadim Dagman [vadim@emuzed.com] A previous comment mentioned Movie Mill, but I could not find it on the web. I haven't tried it yet. Hopefully Adaptec releases an update soon.
